Strathmore Univeristy Scorpions top the women's Premier League
Butali Warriors team manager Victor Opere has stressed on the need to seal the loopholes in the defence if the team is to win the Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League title unbeaten.
The club is bidding to retain the crown they won two years ago without tasting defeat and so far, so good for the club as they haven’t lost in the past fourteen rounds.
The sugarmen have racked up 34 points having won ten times and shared spoils four times. The 2017 league winners Kenya Police are placed second with 27 points, one ahead of Western Jaguars who are ranked third.
Butali have dropped points to Jaguars, Police and the 2016 champions Strathmore University Gladiators who are fourth on the log with 18 points. Opere noted a common mistake committed by the players in the four draws the team has recorded and called for a quick fix before the next round of matches.
He said the team would not have dropped points had the players not lost concentration especially in the final quarter of the game. Opere observed that the inability to maintain focus up to the final whistle was recurrent and was likely to cut their dream of winning the league unbeaten short.
“Our ambition has not changed despite dropping points in the past weeks. We have been playing well but somehow, we have been making errors and conceding goals in the final quarter. We ought to improve on our levels of concentration and fix the defence for us to achieve our target for the season,” he said.
In the women’s Premier League, Strathmore University Scorpions sit at the apex with 25 points, eight ahead of record champions Blazers.
Just like Butali, Scorpions are yet to taste defeat in the season. Similarly, Super League leaders Kenyatta University and National League, Eastern Zone toppers Daikyo Heroes are also unbeaten in their respective competitions.
