The experienced volleyball tactician has taken a break from coaching to focus on his personal career development

General Service Unit (GSU) volleyball team and the national men’s volleyball team; Wafalme Stars are set to miss the services of their celebrated coach Gideon Tarus who revealed that he is taking a break from coaching to focus on career development.

The tactician who works as a GSU officer will be keen to move to the next level of his career.

The decision sees him leave his coaching career for some period as he will be held up in the camp where all his energy and focus will be directed.

This effectively means he will not be with the national team during the African Games in Accra, Ghana. Wafalme Stars departed from the country on Wednesday 6 March.

In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport, the tactician said he needed time to concentrate on his career first.

According to coach Tarus, investing in his personal development beyond the field allows him to bring diverse perspectives and innovative approaches to the coaching staff.

He believes that continuous personal and professional development is not just crucial for his growth, but directly impacts the success of the team and the players he mentors.

“I will take a coaching break to focus on my professional development. The demanding nature of the training will force me to be offline several times, and I will be unavailable during training and game days. As a coach and a GSU officer, embracing continuous development is not just a choice; it's a commitment to the relentless pursuit of excellence in coaching and shaping the future of our athletes both on and off the field,” he told Mozzart Sport.

The tactician expressed optimism that the teams would keep doing their best even in his absence.

GSU won the Dr. Arthur Odera’s tournament which was curtain raised by Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league matches that ran from March 15 to 18.

During the tournament, the paramilitary side ended the Trailblazers’ unbeaten run with a commanding 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) victory to secure the trophy.

Having maintained an impeccable record since the start of the season, the 15-time champions are yet to drop a set, and there is shared optimism that they will finish the league unbeaten.

Their five-year dominance came to a sudden halt in the playoffs last October when they were beaten 3-0 by Kenya Ports Authority. The victory by the Dockers was not enough to claim the top finish but helped Kenya Prisons win the league for the first time since 2016.

GSU leads the standings with 30 points, followed closely by Kenya Prisons with 24 points.

In the women's category, reigning champions KCB secured victories against Nairobi Prisons and Kenya Army, positioning themselves at the top of the table with 18 points.

The league has taken a break as players join the national team for the upcoming African games before the fourth leg, scheduled to take place at Nyayo National Stadium gymnasium.
