Her only partner in Durban - Elizabeth Andiego - is already through to the women's middleweight final

Kenyan boxer Frizah Anyango was on Wednesday night eliminated from the inaugural edition of the Mandela Cup held at the Durban International Convention Centre in South Africa.

The Kenya Defense Forces welterweight champion, taking part in her second major tournament this year, went the full three rounds against Cape Verde’s Gomes Moreira, ultimately losing via the judges’ decision.

Anyango, only one of two Kenyan boxers who took the trip to the South African city, was drawn in the women’s welterweight semifinals and could have earned a place - in the event of a win - against Uganda She Bombers captain Emily Nakalema in the final.

Kenya’s other representative in the competition that has allocated a total prize money worth 500,000 USD (Ksh. 65,500,000) across 25 weight categories is 2022 Africa Boxing Championships silver medalist Elizabeth Andiego.

The Hit Squad skipper appears in the finals of the women’s middleweight division, where she will fight the winner of the semi between Geanne Dicks (South Africa) and Rady Gramane (Mozambique).

The 2024 Paris Olympics hopeful is in her first international competition since her 5-0 Round of 32 loss to Lithuania’s Stonkute Gabriele at the Olympics 1st World Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio.

The second World Qualification Tournament is in Bangkok, Thailand on 25 May - 2 June 2024.
