Former Kenya Ports Authority player adds another feather to her impressive hat of basketball success

Kenya International Felmas Koranga has been named the Newcomer of the Year and made it to the All-Sun Belt Second Team at the Sun Belt post-season awards following her stellar season with Troy University women’s basketball team.

Since joining the Trojans in April 2020, the youngster has had massive impact, guiding the side to finish as East Division champions and league runner-up in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) division one league.

She also put a woman of the match performance to aid Trojans clinch the Sun-Belt championship in a 73-65 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on March 8. The win handed Koranga's side a ticket to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament for the third time in the last five years.

In that final match, Koranga became the first woman to record 22 rebounds in a single Sun Belt game and capped her performance with 12 points for another double-double, her 12th of the season.

Koranga becomes the fourth Trojan, second under coach Chanda Rigby, to be named the Newcomer of the Year.

Her coach, Rigby, was named Coach of the Year, while teammate Alexus Dye was voted Player of the Year as four Trojans earned All-Sun Belt honors.

In addition to the three individual awards earned by the Trojans, Dye was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team while Koranga and Jasmine Robinson were named to the second team. Another Trojan Tiyah Johnson was named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team.

Dye becomes the first Troy women’s basketball player in program history to be named the conference Player of the Year, while Rigby becomes just the second coach in program history to be named the conference Coach of the Year.

Troy’s four All-Sun Belt honorees are the most in a single-season in program history, breaking last season’s program-best of three.
