The event, a key fixture in the school sports calendar, brought together over 350 young swimmers from more than ten schools and clubs, each one chasing glory.

Some of the other powerhouses - excluding the winners - that graced the Saturday 12 July event included: Nova Pioneer Tatu City, Cool Penguins Aquatic Club, and Thomas Burke School.

One of the standout performances of the day was produced by Nova Pioneer Athi School youngster Joseph Hawi, who powered through the 25-meter backstroke in a blistering 21.88 seconds, earning gold and thunderous applause from the stands.

Vuyanzi Renee, a rising star from Thomas Burke School, also delivered her own golden moment, clinching the 50-meter backstroke title with a time of 50.82 seconds.

Calm and composed after the race, she said: “It took discipline. It took focus. I knew I had to give it everything.”

Swimmers took part in boys and girls events split in different events, including the 5 and 6 under, 8-9, over 9, 10-11, 11-12, 12-13, 14-15, and 16 and over.

Trailing Consolata Swim Club in the boys’ category were Thomas Burke School and Juja Preparatory, who completed the podium with 1,175 and 910 points respectively.

In the girls’ events, Consolata Swim Club (1,224) and Thomas Burke School (1,185) took silver and bronze respectively.

Speaking after the event, Consolata School head coach Wycliffe Odongo praised the championships saying: “Events like this light a fire in them (young swimmers). It makes the grind of practice worth it. It turns swimmers into competitors.”

Coach Yvonne Atieno of Thomas Burke meanwhile said: “This is what it’s all about. These children — some barely six — are already learning to carry themselves with grace under pressure. That kind of experience is rare.”

Next up on PIPSSA’s sporting calendar is the Age Group Invitational Skating Championship on Saturday 19 July at Kasarani Stadium.
