The side finished fourth in last season's regular league and are looking to better that performance.
Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men’s league side General Service Unit (GSU) have had a perfect start to the 2022 league, winning back-to-back matches on their opening weekend.
Pitted against students Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on Saturday and Sunday, the paramilitary side made a statement of intent winning 36-26 and 27-21 respectively.
Skipper Raphael Chege is confident the team will keep that momentum going as they have maintained a majority of the squad that did duty last season to qualify for the Super Cup in their first time of asking.
“For now, we are focused on bagging the wins for maximum points. We had no pressure on the opening weekend as we got a chance to gauge ourselves and picking the two wins is good motivation and a positive start.
The season is still young but I can confidently say we are in a good place. We just need to maintain that momentum, keep the speed that has been our weapon against any team and perfect our ball control and we will be good to go,” offered Chege.
Having maintained the same squad that did duty last season, guiding the side to a semis berth in the Super Cup after a fourth-place finish in the regular season, the paramilitary side are expected to present a tough test for the favourites with a better gelled squad.

The side will, however, miss the services of center player Brian Juma who is out with a fractured left hand, sustained during a pre-season tournament.
“With him available, we would have had four players in that position but he will be out for at least six weeks. His absence is not a big blow as we have depth but his contribution will definitely be missed as he is a good player,” added Chege.
Shot stopper Michael Ambuchi is the only new addition to the GSU side and even though he has not played in the league before, Chege was quick to vouch for the keeper opining that he has been in the sport long enough to gain enough experience to handle the top tier. “He has experience playing elsewhere and he has blended well with the rest of the squad,” chege said.
