The last edition of the event was held in 2022 in Birmingham, after the English city stepped in to replace Durban in South Africa

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) says it is considering multiple proposals to host the 2026 Games.

The update, sent to the media on Monday, is the first public announcement by the federation, following Singapore and Malaysia dropping their bids to host the games after original hosts Victoria withdrew due to rising costs.

“Significant progress has been made and we are excited by the early concepts, which aim to reset and reframe the games,” the announcement released following an Executive Board meeting in April stated.

“We are now working collaboratively with the relevant Commonwealth Games Association (CGAs) to undertake further detailed assessments, and aim to announce the 2026 Commonwealth hosts in May.”

No mention of the nations seeking to host was mentioned, as the process, on the request of the CGAs, was agreed to be “confidential.”

During the last games in 2022, Birmingham replaced Durban, South Africa after the latter had its rights stripped for missing key deadlines.

Kenya, among the Commonwealth nations participating in the British city then, emerged the second-best African country behind South Africa in the medal table, winning a total 21 - 6 golds, 5 silvers and 10 bronze medals - to finish 13th overall.

As the CGF continues to “explore innovative new concepts and event opportunities” ahead of the 2023-2024 strategic plan, there remains no host of the 2030 edition after Alberta, Canada, also withdrew its bid.
