The sugar men are placed at the top of the log with 29 points
Butali Warriors captain Constant Wakhura insists says that the team stands good a chance of lifting the Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League title unbeaten after cruising to victory last weekend.
The sugar men consolidated their stay at the apex after hammering Wazalendo 4-1 last Sunday at the City Park Stadium, in a game that Wakhura notched home the second goal from a penalty corner.
Kenyan international Festus Onyango netted a brace with Goerge Mutira adding the fourth goal. Cliffe Omari scored the consolation goal for Wazalendo.
Following the win, Butali who are the only unbeaten side in the men’s top league have 29 points against their name, six ahead of former champions Kenya Police.
Wakhura who has been skippering the team in the past two years after picking the armband from Kenneth Nyongesa who resigned as the team captain after six years said the team’s aim in the season remains winning the league without tasting defeat.
Butali have played eleven matches, winning nine and registering two draws against their arch-rivals Police and Western Jaguars in the first leg.
“Our aim is to win the league title this season without losing a game. We only need to keep on working hard and taking our chances on match days. The game at a time strategy is working well for us on top of the experience we have in the team,” said the Kenyan international.
With Butali set to take on Jaguars in their next match, Wakhura, a systems engineer by profession cautioned his colleagues against underrating the Kakamega based club.
The former Strathmore University defender said the Jaguars team was constituted of talented players who are not only hell-bent on breaking their unbeaten run but also possess the giant-killing prowess.
“This is a team we can’t afford to underrate at all. They held us in the first leg and I am sure they will give their all in the second leg,” he added.
