Buccaneers look to get back to winning ways as GSU face Thika

Reading Time: 2min | Sat. 25.02.23. | 08:12

The league is projected to conclude in a month's time.

In their last outing, Buccaneers lost narrowly to General Service Unit (GSU) and as they played their 16th Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men's league match, they are chasing a win.

The Smith Mbongo-coached side take on Desert Scorpions who have only managed five wins in 13 matches.

A win for Scorpions doesn't move them up the log but will have accumulated 12 points, two shy of varsity side Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), from 14 matches.

As for Buccaneers, they are in the hunt for a Super Cup slot and a win takes them to 20 points and a possible seventh place if Thika HC drop points and also don't improve on their goal difference.

"Mathematically, we might be out of the top six slot but we are still fighting to finish in the beat possible position. We lost some momentum after the exit of a few key players and last weekend's loss to GSU did not help matters.

All the same, we head to today match with a win in mind, despite having a thin bench due to some commitments for some of our players," offered Buccaneers' skipper Franicks Njoroge.

Thika, on their part, have a herculean task as they chase points against GSU for a chance to storm the top six and be in contention for a Super Cup slot.

"Training has been okay and we are prepared for the match. It will not be easy as they (GSU) are a good team so we have to give it our all. We have a few of our players out on slight injuries but the squad tasked to show up will do the job," Thika's Hussein Khalif said.

Meanwhile, Young City take on Spartans. The former ate bottom of the 19-team league with four points from two wins in 14 matches.

With no scare of relegation for Spartans who find themselves in 18th place, with only Young City below them, a win only serves to push them to six points but they maintain their place
