KDF coach dreams of rubbing shoulders with the best in the last four
The Kenya Defence Forces(KDF) Women's Volleyball team head coach Pius Birech will not settle for anything less of the semi finals despite losing 3-0 to KCB in the second leg of the 2021 season.
KDF fell to the star-studded bankers in sets of 25-20,25-20 and 25-16 in day one and were initially set to seek redemption against the Kenya Army team on Sunday but the latter have been ruled out and hence their matches have been rescheduled.
Birech who was impressed by the fighting spirit depicted by his girls had earlier set his sights on guiding the team to seal a place in the playoffs but after watching their duel against KCB, he has changed his mind and set lofty targets.
The towering said the team used the match to assess their preparedness in rubbing shoulders with the volleyball powerhouses in the knockout stages of the season.
"We had trained well for the second leg but unfortunately we didn't begin well. I however must congratulate my players for the courage they played with against KCB. Before, we wanted to qualify for the playoffs but with the way they played, I am convinced we can advance to the semis," he said
With KDF's second leg outing over the absence of Army whom they were to play on Sunday, Birech revealed his plan to use the lengthy break to fix his defence.
"We weren't strong enough in our backcourt .The KCB match helped expose our weakness in defending quick balls. I am glad time is on our side and we will try our best to work on the weak areas before the third leg," he added
