African Games: Malkia Strikers, Wafalme Stars aiming vengeance in key Friday semis

Both Kenyan teams carry potential of making it to the gold medal games as they are unbeaten in the tournament

Kenyan volleyball will shine the spotlight Friday afternoon as Wafalme Stars and Malkia Strikers take the court in pivotal African semifinals at the Methodist University Multipurpose Hall in Accra, Ghana.

The two sides, all within reach of gold medals, had incredible quarter final appearances on Wednesday and Thursday respectively, breezing past Burkina Faso and Gambia in straight sets to set up tasty last four ties.

To start off the day will be Elisha Aliwa’s side, Wafalme Stars, who will renew their rivalry with Cameroon at 1300 EAT.

Though with a chance to bag their first Games medal since claiming bronze in 2011, Wafalme Stars will have revenge on their minds as they seek to overturn their 3-1 sets defeat to the Central African representatives in last year’s African Nations Championships.

Current form

Kenya has not dropped any set in the tournament while Cameroon dropped two and one against Egypt and Chad respectively, indicates that Wafalme Stars have a realistically better chance of a romp to the finals. It is easier said than done though.

The other semifinal will see Egypt take on hosts Ghana.

Malkia Strikers face familiar foes

The same theme - of revenge - could dictate proceedings for defending African Games champions Malkia Strikers when they take on Egypt in the women’s volleyball semifinals at 1500 EAT at MUH Multipurpose Hall.

The North Africans got the better of Kenya (3-1) in the African Games qualifiers held in Cairo earlier in the year, but Japheth Munala’s side will take comfort in the fact that the team didn’t have their best players who were unavailable for the tournament on various grounds.

And so a path to a three-peat will go through the tougher root, as Ghana and Tunisia square off in the other semifinal.

Kenya comes in unblemished thus far, while Egypt carry with them the scars on an opening day 3-1 defeat to Tunisia.
