Silas' prayers to break the gates of Ulinzi answered as Lakeside pick first win and force the soldier to surrender points.
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men's league champions Ulinzi Warriors have dropped their first point in the 2021 season as they fell 61-59 to Kisumu Lakeside in a Saturday, 20 March, afternoon game.
Sila Awuor and Sila Guya were on fire as they sunk 18 and 15 points respectively while Justus Oki and Marko Odhiambo added nine and eight respectively for the win.
Lakeside led 20-17 in the first quarter and extended the gap to six points going into the half time break with a 15-12 second quarter score. Warriors scored 20 in the third quarter to head to the final period with a slim half a basket lead. A final quarter score of 13-10 in favour of the hosts handed them their first win this season, and their sweet revenge against the soldiers who bundled them out of the 2019 playoffs at the quarters with a similar one basket win.
Coach William Balozi had travelled to Kisumu without team forward Ancet Wafula and centre player Joseph Owino as well as point guard Joseph Khaemba who are out with injuries.
Alex Okoa-coached Lakeside have a revamped squad that has Kenya Ports Authority's (KPA) Bryan Ocholla, Kenyatta University's Marko, George Collins, Jayden simiyu and Allan Kibira who were turning up for Kisumu-based University sides before joining Lakeside.
Additionally, the Safarilink Aviation sponsored-side will have former Katherine College star Joshua Carter.
Meanwhile, Women league champions Equity Bank Hawks made easy work of opponents for the day Kenyatta University Oryx in a 90-32 outcome from a highly one-sided match.
"Oryx has always been a good side but they did not offer the challenge we had prepared for. We had an easy time on the court and to take full advantage of the situation I rotated the squad more," said David Maina, Equity's technical director who was the stand-in coach of the day.
