Xabi's debut party: 10-goal festival and a victory over the Australians

Xabi Alonso marked his first game in charge of Chelsea with a victory, but his side had to overcome a resilient Western Sydney Wanderers team in an entertaining 6-4 pre-season thriller. The Blues fought back repeatedly before Joao Pedro stole the spotlight with a late hat-trick to secure the win.

Played at Sydney's Accor Stadium, the contest featured constant momentum swings, with the lead changing hands several times. While Chelsea impressed going forward, defensive lapses exposed areas Alonso will undoubtedly look to address before the new season begins.

The Spaniard opted for a mixed lineup, handing opportunities to several youngsters alongside a handful of established first-team players. Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap, and Dario Essugo were the experienced names in an otherwise youthful starting XI.

Chelsea started brightly despite the difficult playing surface, which had been heavily damaged after hosting multiple rugby league matches over the weekend. Their early pressure paid off when debutant Dastan Satpayev latched onto an excellent through ball from Ryan Kavuma-McQueen before confidently finishing past Jordan Holmes to open the scoring.

The advantage lasted only a few minutes. Western Sydney quickly capitalized on Chelsea's defensive uncertainty as Anthony Pantazopoulos rose highest to head home the equalizer. The Australian side continued to exploit space at the back, and Hammond completed the turnaround after comfortably beating Acheampong before slotting beyond Teddy Sharman-Lowe. Hammond nearly added another soon after, but failed to punish a costly giveaway from Tosin Adarabioyo.

Chelsea's attack, however, continued to create chances with ease. A slick move orchestrated by Dario Essugo ended with the Portuguese midfielder calmly finishing to level the score before halftime, ensuring the teams went into the break on equal terms.

The Wanderers regained control after the restart when Scicluna reacted quickest to a fortunate rebound following Emenalo's attempted clearance. Alonso responded with a wave of substitutions, introducing several senior stars, including Cole Palmer, Estevao, Levi Colwill, Joao Pedro, and fellow debutant Marco Palestra.

The changes immediately injected fresh energy. Jamie Gittens tested the goalkeeper with his first involvement before converting Joao Pedro's cross moments later to continue his excellent pre-season form, making it three goals in as many appearances.

Chelsea looked the more dangerous side during the closing stages, but another defensive mistake gifted Western Sydney a late opportunity. Estevao misplaced a pass, allowing Awan Lual to race through and restore the hosts' lead with a composed finish underneath Sanchez.

That advantage proved short-lived. Joao Pedro equalized almost immediately with a composed finish before completing the turnaround moments later. The Brazilian forward then capped a remarkable cameo by converting from close range after a scramble inside the box, sealing his hat-trick and wrapping up an eventful victory for Alonso in his first outing as Chelsea manager.
