Kenya will have a strong presence in the men’s 800m semifinals at the Commonwealth Games after Wycliffe Kinyamal, Kelvin Loti and Nicholas Kebenei all successfully negotiated their respective heats in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday, 28 July.
All three runners advanced to Thursday’s semifinals, keeping Kenya’s hopes of extending its rich tradition in the two-lap race alive.

Leading the charge was two-time defending champion Kinyamal, who made a composed start to his quest for an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth Games title.
Running from lane seven in the opening heat, Kinyamal settled into the leading pack before moving into third behind O’Toole and Partisan in the early stages.
As the race approached the final lap, the Kenyan gradually increased the pace, surged to the front and never looked back.
He maintained his advantage down the home straight to cross the finish line first in 1:46.79, comfortably sealing his place in the semifinals.
Kinyamal is already a Commonwealth Games history-maker.
He claimed his maiden title at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia in 1:45.11 before defending the crown in Birmingham in 2022, winning in 1:47.52 to become the first man to successfully retain the men’s 800m title at the Games.
Loti also impressed with a tactical display in his heat.
The Kenyan started cautiously before gradually working his way through the field to tuck in behind Luke Boyes and Preston.
Remaining relaxed throughout the race, Loti timed his finishing kick perfectly after the bell, first moving into second before powering past Boyes in the closing stages.
His smooth, effortless strides carried him to victory in 1:47.22.
Boyes finished second in 1:47.37, while Navasky Anderson completed the top three in 1:48.12, with all three advancing to the semifinals.
Britain’s Max Burgin won the third heat to secure his own place in the next round.
In the final heat, Kebenei lined up in lane eight and produced another encouraging performance.
Kebenei dictated much of the race from the front before Australia’s Peter Bol launched a late charge in the closing metres to snatch victory in 1:45.86.
The Kenyan crossed the line fourth in 1:45.99, doing enough to secure qualification for the semifinals.
The men’s 800m semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, July 30, where Kenya’s trio will bid for places in the final.
