The former Gor Mahia striker has enjoyed a rich vein of form for the national team, proving to be a reliable scorer, and for his troubles, has 34 goals to his name so far.

Olunga’s brace against Seychelles on Tuesday, 9 September, was historic as it drew him level with legendary Harambee Stars forward Dennis Oliech on 34 goals.

Most importantly, though, it took him just a goal shy of the record held by former Gor Mahia man William ‘Chege’ Ouma.

The former Harambee Stars man has held the record for over 48 years, his last appearance for the national team coming in 1977.

Olunga will have two shots in the next week at breaking the record, but the Al-Arabi man is not focused on that, as he revealed to the media on the sidelines of Kenya’s training session on Monday, 6 October.

“The most important thing for me is to work hard and help the team in whichever way that I can, and so the record is not so much in my mind,” said Olunga.

Nevertheless, the historic feat is one that the former Tusker FC forward would relish to achieve even as he reflected on his journey with the national team.

“It is definitely a good achievement and something any player would aspire to achieve. Hopefully, one day, I will be able to become the all-time top scorer. However, there still remains a lot of hard work to put in.

At the end of the day, it is a great feeling, and I am happy with the journey so far,” he stated.

For Olunga, this will be another testament to his prowess in front of goal, having etched his name in the history books of Qatar side Al Duhail, where he is the all-time goalscorer with 130 goals.

In the end, it is a matter of when and not if the former Girona FC striker will break the 48-year record.
