With just under two weeks left before the country marks this year’s Mashujaa Day, the government has provided a major update on the ongoing construction of the new Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, the venue set to host the 62nd edition of the national celebrations on Monday, 20 October.

According to Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, the Ksh700 million facility is now 96 per cent complete.
Mvurya announced through his official Facebook page that he will hand over the stadium to the National Steering Committee for National Celebrations next week to allow final preparations for the historic event.

“Ithookwe Stadium, now 96% complete, stands ready to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on 20th October.
I will be handing over the facility to the National Steering Committee for National Celebrations next week, marking a major milestone in our preparations for this historic event,” said the CS.
He affirmed that while the stadium will be ready to host the national event, additional works will continue after the celebrations to elevate the facility to international standards.
“The Government remains firm that the standards of the stadium will not be compromised. Auxiliary works under a whole-of-government approach will continue beyond the celebrations to ensure that all facilities meet international standards,” he added.

The project, which began in July, has been fast-tracked under the government’s sports infrastructure modernisation agenda.
Once complete, Ithookwe Stadium is expected to accommodate 10,000 spectators, featuring a modern football pitch, tartan running track, VIP stands, and roofing nearing completion.
In addition, major road upgrades, both rural and urban, leading to the venue are progressing well, ensuring smooth access for the thousands expected to attend the celebrations.

During his inspection tour, Mvurya was accompanied by Kitui Governor Julius Malombe, Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports), Raymond Omollo (Internal Security), and Jonathan Mweke (Livestock Development), alongside Sports Kenya Chair Mark Lomunokol and officials from the National Steering Committee for National Celebrations.
