Despite signing for Sofapaka, Simiyu never made a single appearance for the club. His stay was cut short before it truly began, forcing him to return to Nzoia Sugar
When Sofapaka unveiled 17 new signings at Marist Grounds in Karen on August 2, 2023, Ian Simiyu was among the fresh faces expected to help revive the fortunes of the 2009 FKF Premier League champions.

The midfielder had earned his move after impressing at Nzoia Sugar FC and looked set to take the next step in his burgeoning career. However, the transfer collapsed almost as quickly as it had been announced.
Despite signing for Sofapaka, Simiyu never made a single appearance for the club. His stay was cut short before it truly began, forcing him to return to Nzoia Sugar.
Reflecting on the failed transfer, Simiyu insisted that there was no major controversy behind the move falling through.
"It wasn't a major issue. I had already signed for Sofapaka, but since Nzoia Sugar had not provided my release letter, the move could not be completed, and I had to return to the club," he explained.
The setback came at a difficult time. Several of his former teammates were securing moves to top FKF Premier League clubs while he found himself heading back to a club that had been depleted by a mass exodus of players after their impressive 2022/23 season.
For many players, such a disappointment could have derailed their careers. Simiyu, however, chose a different path.
“I think it was part of God’s plan,” he said.
Back at Nzoia Sugar, he focused on improving his game and quickly became one of the standout performers. His impressive displays and eye for goal attracted interest from several top-flight clubs.
In February 2025, Tusker FC won the race for his signature, offering him another opportunity to prove himself at the highest level.
However, his journey with the Brewers was not smooth either.
Simiyu initially struggled for game time and had to remain patient as he adapted to life at one of Kenya's biggest clubs. Weeks turned into months before he finally got his breakthrough moment.
That moment arrived against Shabana at Kasarani Stadium in October 2025 when he scored his first goal for Tusker. The goal appeared to unlock a new level in his game.
Since then, Simiyu has established himself as one of the most influential midfielders in the country. His performances played a key role in Tusker's successful campaign, culminating in an outstanding display in the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup final, where he was named Man of the Match.
He scored both goals to see Tusker end their 10-year wait for the Mozzart Bet Cup title.
His remarkable season was further rewarded with the Midfielder of the Season accolade and the tournament's Most Valuable Player award.
