Talanta is a flagship project by GoK to build a brand-new stadium to improve sports infrastructure in anticipation of the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Kenya will co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside neighbors Tanzania and Uganda in a joint bid dubbed PAMOJA (Swahili word for Together). The three nations also won the bid to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which they successfully hosted in August 2025.

While Nyayo National Stadium and the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani were adequate for Kenya to host CHAN, AFCON requires another major facility, hence the construction of Talanta Stadium.

The construction of the ultramodern facility began in March 2024 after a groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Kenyan President William Ruto under the tenure of Ababu Namwamba as the Cabinet Secretary for Sports.

While the initial completion date of the facility was set at 31 December 2025 and later 31 March 2026, unforeseen challenges have pushed its completion further, but with construction now over 90% complete.

According to photos shared online by Principal Secretary (PS) for Interior and Coordination of National Government Raymond Omollo as well as updates from his page, the facility is at its final phase.

“Rising at the historic Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road, the 60,000-seat ultra-modern arena has reached its final construction phase, with major structural works complete and teams now finalizing ICT systems, broadcast infrastructure, and spectator facilities.

Purpose-built for football and rugby, the stadium is designed to deliver a world-class fan experience, with stands positioned close to the field of play,” reads part of the post by Omollo.

The experienced administrator, who also serves as the patron of 2024 Mozzart Bet Cup winners Police FC, went ahead to explain some of the sophisticated features of the Stadium.

“Its distinctive architecture draws inspiration from Maasai shield and spear motifs, while the facility incorporates a hybrid playing surface, smart technologies, solar energy systems, and rainwater harvesting infrastructure, demonstrating Kenya's ambition to deliver a modern and sustainable sporting landmark,” he added.

From the Photos, the hybrid grass - a combination of natural and artificial grass which had already been installed at Talanta—has already germinated and has begun to establish itself, awaiting full maturity and growing in.

The grass is currently undergoing specialized irrigation, regulated from the fully installed water sprinklers as well as manual irrigation.

The temperatures are also regulated, and so is the artificial lighting as well as hybrid enhancement in order to have a world-class playing surface that meets FIFA and CAF standards.

Once the grass is fully mature, the stadium will be expected to be opened up for a series of test matches before the 2027 AFCON, which is a year away.

From the photos, the installation of seats in the facility is already complete and different based on the sections of the stadium. Regular sitting areas have seats with a backrest but not foldable, while the VIP seats have both a backrest and are foldable.

VVIP seats are specially made with extended cushions, are foldable, have cup holders, and are spaced well to allow guests to move freely without interrupting others, as is required by CAF regulations.

The facility is already creating headlines across the globe, as it is one of the only five stadiums in the world to use a computerized hydraulic tension cable - the kates roofing engineering technology that uses tension rather than compression to stabilize the roof.

In this technology, a combination of powerful hydraulic jacks is combined with a network of high-strength steel cables, which are fitted gradually as the cable is installed and lifted in phases from the ground to a few meters from the top level of the stadium

Additionally, the stadium will also have a media facade lighting the outer wall, akin to Allianz Arena, home of German club Bayern Munich.

The media facade lighting is a technology that integrates LED or other advanced lighting technologies on the outer surface of buildings, in this case, the stadium, to create large-scale, visually engaging displays.
