Akonnor spoke after K'Ogalo restored their six-point cushion at the summit of the log with a commanding 3-0 win over KCB FC on Sunday, 22 February, at Nyayo National Stadium.
“In football, there is always pressure. It is healthy, and we welcome it. We need to be focused on every game we play. It is not going to be easy.
The team with the nerves to keep going is the one that will surely go far, and I believe we have what it takes,” said the Ghanaian tactician.
The record league champions took to the pitch a day after AFC Leopards had edged Posta Rangers at the same venue, a result that temporarily narrowed the gap at the summit.
“We saw them play yesterday (on Saturday), and of course they put us under pressure after winning their game,” Akonnor admitted, noting the significance of every fixture at this stage of the campaign.
The former Ghana international also hailed the transformation within his squad, noting that the current Gor side is far more composed than they were a few months ago.
“Our boys, in every aspect of our game and the things we are doing, are processing things very well. They are confident, which gives us more assurance.
Three or four months ago, we would have been worried a lot, but now we are confident, as the team is showing good understanding and progress,” he added.
The victory over KCB stretched Gor’s unbeaten league run to 11 matches and marked a sixth straight win under Akonnor.
However, K'Ogalo cannot afford complacency, with AFC Leopards, coached by Fred Ambani, breathing down their necks in second place, just six points behind.
Ingwe kept pace with a hard-fought win over Posta courtesy of stunning strikes from Kelly Madada and Kayci Odhiambo, ensuring the title race remains delicately poised heading into the decisive final stretch.
