Who should be the captain? Myself!

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate "humbly" proposed himself for the role of the new France captain

Considering that Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud retired from the national team and Kylian Mbappe and N'Golo Kante are currently out of the squad, France has no captain. Hence, Didier Deschamps will have an important to make before Les Blues' matches with Israel and Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.

However, in case the 55-year-old tactician had second thoughts, one of his players presented his ideas on the new French leader. And that would probably go unnoticed if that player, Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate - whose appearance when arriving for international duty drew many eyes, to say the least - did not name himself as one of the candidates?!

"Being a leader is something that is innate. You either have it or you don't. You have to be someone that everyone likes. A leader has to be there especially when things aren't going well. It's like the foundations of a house; he holds up the group so that everything can go well. Some players have the profile. I have two or three names: Mike (Maignan), myself, Jules (Kounde) and Aurélien (Tchouameni). Those are the only names that come to mind," Konate said at his national team's press conference, as per Get French Football News.

A very bold statement considering that it comes from a player who is only twelfth in the current Les Blues squad regarding both the number of appearances (17) and the age (25). Moreover, Konate was included in the EURO 2024 squad but did not play a single minute during the tournament. All this puts a huge question mark over his reputation on the team as well as his leadership capacity.
