Three years ago, they were asking for the Egyptian and got a firm 'no' at Anfield. Alas, things have changed drastically in the meantime
Last night, the news broke - and it landed like a thunderclap across the football world. Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the current season, bringing an era at Anfield to a close and sending shockwaves through fans, pundits, and potential suitors alike.
What comes next, however, remains shrouded in uncertainty.
"We do not know where Mohamed will play next season," his agent Ramy Abbas Issa posted on Tuesday night. "This also means that no one else knows."
And yet, speculation is already accelerating.
The most obvious pull, particularly for a global superstar entering the later stages of his career, comes from Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Pro League has rapidly transformed into a destination for elite names, with figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema leading the charge. Salah would also find familiar faces there, including former Liverpool teammates Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum.
Among the most persistent admirers are Al-Ittihad, a club backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). They famously tested Liverpool's resolve in 2023, only to be firmly rebuffed at the time. Still, that failed pursuit helped forge a connection - one that could now resurface under very different circumstances. Beyond financial muscle, Al-Ittihad also offer proximity to Egypt, both geographically and culturally, and a track record of integrating Egyptian players into a successful environment.
Another heavyweight option within the kingdom is Al-Hilal, historically the most decorated side in the country. Also owned by the Public Investment Fund, they explored a move for Salah in 2024 ahead of the expanded Club World Cup in 2025, though no deal materialised. With his Liverpool chapter now closing, that interest could yet be revived.
Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool Football Club at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The time to fully celebrate his legacy and achievements will follow later in the year when he bids farewell to Anfield ❤️
Further afield, Major League Soccer presents a different kind of appeal. The United States has become an increasingly attractive landing spot for global stars, blending commercial opportunity with a growing competitive profile. MLS commissioner Don Garber made little effort to hide his admiration earlier this year, suggesting Salah would be welcomed "with open arms" should he ever choose that path.
In that scenario, he could follow in the footsteps of players like Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller, both cited as examples of how seamlessly elite European careers can transition into the American game.
For now, though, the only certainty is the uncertainty. Salah's next move remains one of football's biggest open questions, and wherever he lands, the aftershocks of his Liverpool exit are only just beginning.
