Newcastle have probably given up on Hugo Ekitike, and turned to Yoanne Wissa of Brentford

They were openly interested in Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, but as things stand, Newcastle United have given up on him and turned to a whole different league and player - Yoanne Wissa.

As per The Athletic, the Magpies are exploring a deal to sign the 28-year-old Brentford striker. The Congolese forward was the Premier League's highest non-penalty goalscorer last season, scoring 19 goals in 35 games.

His Brentford contract expires in June 2026, though they have an option to extend it for another year.

Previously, Newcastle were prioritising a move for Ekitike but had an €80million bid turned down by the Bundesliga side, as he's getting closer to Liverpool instead.

Therefore, Wissa is high among their alternative targets, but in that particular case, the Bees are also waiting to see the outcome of Bryan Mbeumo's case.

If he joins Manchester United after all, Wissa's potential departure could be a bit too much for Brentford. Their captain, Christian Norgaard, has also joined Arsenal in the ongoing transfer window.

Wissa joined Brentford in 2021 from Lorient.
