
Western and Nyanza Region champions crowned as schools secure KSSSA national games slots

In Western Region, Kakamega High School emerged as the boys' football champions after edging arch rivals Musingu High School 2-0 after extra time in a tightly contested final.
The curtain came down on the 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two regional championships over the weekend, with schools from Western and Nyanza regions battling for titles and qualification to the national finals later this month.

In Western Region, Kakamega High School emerged as the boys' football champions after edging arch rivals Musingu High School 2-0 after extra time in a tightly contested final.
The victory completed an impressive campaign for the Kakamega County giants and earned them a place at the national championships.
The girls' football title went to Archbishop Njenga Girls, who defeated Butere Girls 2-1 in an entertaining final at Kanduyi Stadium to book their ticket to the nationals.
Western Region also witnessed history in rugby sevens as Bokoli Boys High School defeated Butula Boys 14-0 to win the regional title and qualify for the KSSSA National Games for the first time since the sport was introduced.
Mbakalo Girls were equally dominant in the girls' rugby sevens final, beating Kimobo Girls 24-7. Despite the defeat, Kimobo also secured qualification for the national championships.
In volleyball, Malava Boys lifted the regional boys' title after defeating Chesamisi Boys 3-0 in straight sets, while St. Mathias Mwitoti Girls' Senior School stunned former champions Lugulu Girls with another commanding 3-0 victory to claim the girls' crown.
Meanwhile, in Nyanza Region, St. Cecilia Aluor Girls High School dethroned defending champions Nyakongo with a convincing 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-22) victory in the girls' volleyball final.
Aluor had earlier eliminated Nyakongo in the semifinals before overcoming former champions Nyakach Girls in the final to complete a remarkable campaign.
The boys' volleyball title went to Masara Secondary School after an entertaining five-set thriller against St. Mary's School, Yala.
Yala took the opening set 25-19 before Masara responded by winning the second and third sets 25-20 and 25-19, respectively.
Yala forced a decisive fifth set after taking the fourth 25-18, but Masara recovered from a 6-0 deficit to win 15-11 and clinch the regional title.
In netball, Asumbi Girls High School from Homa Bay dethroned national champions Oyugi Ogango 34-31 to become the new Nyanza Region champions and secure qualification for the national games.
Asumbi also celebrated success in girls' basketball 3x3, overcoming Tuk Jowi 22-20 after overtime following a 20-20 tie in regulation time.
The Homa Bay County side had earlier eliminated Barchando in the semifinals after Barchando shocked East Africa champions Ng'iya Girls in the quarterfinals.
The boys' basketball 3x3 title was claimed by Agoro Sare High School, who edged defending champions St Mary's School Yala 13-12 in a closely fought final. Despite the defeat, Yala also qualified for the national championships.
Speaking after the final, Yala coach Leonard Okuku remained upbeat despite narrowly missing out on the title.
"Our goal was to reach the nationals, which we did. We would have loved to crown it with the title, but I am happy we achieved our objective of qualifying," said Okuku.
On the football pitch, St Mary's School Yala captured the Nyanza Region boys' football title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kisumu Boys High School at a packed Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
After a goalless first half, Fidel Castro scored the decisive goal in the 80th minute to hand the Siaya County side their first regional football title. Yala also missed a penalty but controlled much of the second half to seal victory.
"I am proud of my boys today. This title eluded us last year when we painfully lost to Kisumu Boys in the semifinals through penalties. We were the better team then and we are a strong side today. We celebrate the win and now shift our focus to the nationals," said Yala Chief Principal Victor Makanda.
The girls' football crown went to Nyakach Girls High School, who defeated Kobala Girls 1-0 in the final to become the new regional champions and qualify for the national championships.
With the regional championships concluded, champions and top finishers from both Western and Nyanza will now shift their attention to the KSSSA National Games, where they will battle for national honors and the opportunity to represent Kenya at the East Africa School Games.
