Wekesa joined Nzoia in 2020 as a forward but has since transitioned to a right back
If you have been keen enough, you may have easily noticed that Nzoia Sugar have been deploying Elisha Wekesa, a natural forward at right-back.
Wekesa, has so far played all the four league matches as a right back and could be in like for full transition from a goal poacher to a defender according to coach Godfrey Oduor.
Nzoia, had to look for a makeshift right back after first choice Moses Mwale suffered a knee injury that requires surgery.
Further, Nzoia lost another full back in Kevin Maliachi who ditched the club for FC Talanta.
Although the club reunited with former national U20 right back Brian Wepo who signed for the sugarmen in the off-season transfer window, Oduor says the manner in which Wekesa has conducted himself in the unfamiliar territory has convinced him that he is the right man for the job.
“He has handled the transition well so far. He is very tough in defending and fast in attacking as well. He runs and thinks simultaneously which makes him a unique full back,” said Oduor.
The explosive runs on the wing and solid defending demonstrated by the national U23 trialist have already won Oduor’s heart.
“The player has no intentions of playing as right back again. He is enjoying the transition so are we,” said the former KCB assistant coach.
With the door to the Harambee Stars always open to players, Oduor believes that it is just a matter of time before Wekesa walks through it and even challenge the existing order.
“I will not be shocked if the so-called big clubs come for him. It will not equally come as a shock to me if he gets his first national team call up in future,” claimed the former Kibera Black Stars coach.
Wekesa joined Nzoia three years ago on a five-year long deal.
