Vihiga aiming to build on Ingwe draw

Vihiga currently find themselves in the relegation places but Sammy believes the draw will spur them on to beat the drop

Vihiga United head coach Sammy Okoth was left delighted with his boys’ performance on Saturday after his side held AFC Leopards to a frustrating 0-0 draw in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League. The barren stalemate saw Vihiga extinguish Ingwe’s three-match winning streak prior to the game.

Giving his assessment after that game, the head coach has now laid intentions to build on that morale-boosting draw against an in-form Leopards and fight to lift his side from their current 16th position on the log.

“After losing our last match (against Zoo), at least getting one point against the kind of opposition we played is commendable. The draw is a plus for us and I believe it will help us in our next match,” he stated.

Since being promoted to the top-tier this season, Vihiga United have found it difficult to convert their chances in front of goal. The team is the lowest-scoring team in the league with just six goals to their name in sixteen games played and Sammy knows way too well what needs to be done if they are to have a fighting chance in fighting the drop.

“Scoring has been a very big problem to us and we have also been losing our games easily. Right now, we have worked on not conceding so we want to look at how we can start scoring goals. Our approach right now is defending and being careful so as not to concede carelessly the way we have in our previous games despite playing well,” he revealed.

Vihiga United have a perfect chance of ending their seven-match winless run when they take on a struggling Mathare United in their next league encounter taking place after the international break. Mathare sit in seventeenth place, two points behind them on the log standings.
