Speaking on KBC TV while presenting the coveted CHAN trophy at the station's studio, the former Southampton midfielder lauded Kenyans for their unwavering support despite Harambee Stars’ heartbreaking elimination.

Kenya’s campaign came to an excruciating end after a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar in the quarterfinals, despite topping Group A with an impressive 10 points.

Yet, what resonated most with the 34-year-old was not the exit but the electric atmosphere created by fans who filled the stands in unprecedented numbers.

“My biggest experience and what stood out was the fans’ turnout. It was really big and good; it shows we are back in football.

The fans pushed the boys; it’s been a long time since we saw such numbers in the stadium, and hopefully this is the beginning of fans returning to the league,” Wanyama said.

Matchday tickets involving Harambee Stars were sold out days in advance, underscoring the renewed appetite for local football.

Even during the clash against Zambia, where CAF capped attendance at 60%, supporters nearly maxed out the 27,000 seats allocated, a figure rarely witnessed in recent years.

Beyond the fans, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic FC anchorman praised CAF for what he termed a “properly handled” tournament, commending the smooth organisation, logistics, and ticketing structure.

“I would say the tournament has been a success from setup to selling of tickets to logistics, and everything in between. In conclusion, it has been properly handled,” he added.

With the new FKF Premier League season set to kick off on Saturday, 20 September, Wanyama urged Kenyans to replicate the same energy in domestic fixtures. The curtain-raiser will see KCB FC take on Tusker FC in a much-anticipated opener.

“The facilities have been massively improved, and therefore, with the pitches in place, I urge fans to turn up and make the league competitive,” Wanyama appealed.

The eighth edition of the CHAN championship will conclude on Saturday, 30 August, with the final and closing ceremony scheduled at the Kasarani Stadium.
