The 34-year-old praised the squad for exhibiting heart, courage and unity throughout their journey
Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has applauded Kenya’s spirited showing at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN), despite the team bowing out in agonising fashion after suffering a penalty shootout defeat to Madagascar.
Making their debut in the continental tournament, Kenya’s journey was nothing short of remarkable. Stars lit up the group stages with three victories and a draw, an impressive run that saw them finish top of Group A with 10 points.

Along the way, they claimed memorable scalps against heavyweights Morocco and DR Congo, both two-time champions, edging each with a 1-0 scoreline. A narrow win over Zambia and a hard-fought 1-1 comeback against Angola cemented their place in the knockout stages at the very first attempt.
Kenya’s quarterfinal tie against Madagascar, however, ended in heartbreak.
Harambee Stars appeared on course for a historic semi-final berth after Gor Mahia defender Alphonce Omija headed home Boniface Muchiri’s inch-perfect delivery shortly after the restart.
Yet, the dream slipped away in the dying moments when Madagascar’s Fenohasina Gilles equalised from the penalty spot, forcing the game to extra time and ultimately a dramatic shootout.
In the tense decider, despite keeper Bryne Omondi saving Toky's penalty, misses from Michael Kibwage and Omija proved costly, with Kenya falling 4-3 to exit the tournament.
Despite the setback, Wanyama was full of praise for the team and head coach Benni McCarthy, taking to Instagram to share his admiration.
"Proud of our Harambee Stars. You played with heart, courage, and unity, reminding us that football is more than trophies—it’s about pride, passion, and resilience. Though CHAN ends here, the journey continues. Onwards and upwards," he wrote.
Proud of the boys, the journey doesn't end, its starting, and to coach Benny, thank you for bringing back joy to our game 🇰🇪 pic.twitter.com/WIh6Zu1bWb

"To coach Benni McCarthy, thank you for reviving football and bringing class and professionalism. We can only wait to see what’s ahead.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and CF Montréal midfielder’s message resonated with fans, underlining the sense of optimism generated by the team’s display.
For a nation long starved of continental success, Kenya’s CHAN run not only showcased progress but also reignited belief in the country's football revival.
Attention now shifts to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Kenya will resume duty in September with back-to-back home fixtures against Burundi on Friday, 5 September, before welcoming Gambia on Tuesday, 9 September, at Kasarani Stadium.
