Uganda Cranes coach Milutin Sredojevic sacked

Uganda failed to qualify for AFCON 2023 after finishing third in pool F behind Tanzania and Algeria and it is this that has led to the sacking of the Serbian tactician

Serbian coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has paid the price of failing to aid Uganda Cranes punch a ticket to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals set for next year in Ivory Coast.

Uganda were on the verge of securing a place in the finals but lost the race to Tanzania who finished second in pool F behind Algeria.

Cranes were in dire need of a win in the final round of the qualifier matches and at the same time, were hoping that Algeria would beat Tanzania so as to qualify as the group’s first runner up.

That did not come to pass as Tanzania put in a gallant fight and consequently, secured a draw in Algeria to finish second in the group with eight points, one ahead of Uganda.

Cranes wrapped their qualification campaign with a 2-0 win over Niger but it wasn’t enough to leapfrog Taifa Stars who return to the AFCON for the first time since 2019.

A brief statement from FUFA confirmed that the Sredojevic who is commonly known as Serbian Wolf had indeed been sent packing.

Today, Thursday 14th September 2023, FUFA and Mr. Milutin Sredojevic agreed to mutually end the existing employment contract between the two parties.

FUFA appreciates all efforts and commitment by Mr. Milutin during his period as head coach of Uganda Cranes,” read a communique from the federation.

Micho rejoined Cranes in July 2021 on a three-year long deal after parting ways with the Football Association of Zambia.

Micho coached Uganda from 2013 to 2017 where his greatest achievement was leading the national team to first the AFCON 2017 after 38 years of waiting.

He also led the Cranes to the 2014 and 2016 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN).

Besides coaching the Zambian national team, Micho has also handled African clubs including Zamalek of Eyhypt and South African giants Orlando Pirates.
