'I was a criminal lawyer for 24 years but I’ve never, ever, seen people like that' said Ceferin at the press conference

The newly formed European Super League caused an enormous shock and disbelief. And not only did it affected (and will affect in the future) the European and world’s football world, but it also shocked a lot of people on a personal level. And UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is one of them.

Speaking in a UEFA news conference on Monday, Ceferin spoke about the people who formed the new Superleague, with whom he had a professional but also informal contact, calling them ’liars’ and ’snakes’.

I was a criminal lawyer for 24 years but I’ve never, ever, seen people like that. Ed Woodward called me last Thursday evening saying he’s very satisfied with and fully supports the Champions League reforms and the only thing he wanted to talk about was FFP when obviously he had already signed something else. Andrea Agnelli is the biggest disappointment of all, I’ve never seen a person that would lie so many times, so persistently as he did. It’s unbelievable. We didn’t know we had snakes working close to us, but now we know. I met many liars in football and many people I trust. If I mention a few. I trust the clubs from France and Germany, who resisted this temptation. Football is not all corrupt. Just a small part, led by greed and people who don’t care about anything else” said the UEFA chief.

Ceferin said UEFA remains committed to banning players who take part in the Super League from upcoming UEFA tournaments.

We will take all the sanctions that we can… and we will inform you as soon as we have a clear answer. My opinion is that, as soon as possible, the players have to be banned from all our competitions. “They will not be able to represent their national teams at any matches. UEFA and the footballing world stand united against the disgraceful self-serving proposal we have seen in the last 24 hours from a select few clubs in Europe that are fuelled purely by greed above all else” confirmed Ceferin.

UEFA’s 55 member federations are gathering for an annual meeting on Tuesday, including 24 nations that are playing in Euro 2020. Earlier, the 12 planning to start the breakaway Super League told the leaders of FIFA and UEFA that they have begun legal action aimed at fending off threats to block the competition.

Your formal statement does, however, compel us to take protective steps to secure ourselves against such an adverse reaction, which would not only jeopardize the funding commitment under the Grant but, significantly, would be unlawful. For this reason, SLCo (Super League Company) has filed a motion before the relevant courts in order to ensure the seamless establishment and operation of the Competition in accordance with applicable laws” says in a letter to Ceferin and Infantino.
