Mette, who took charge of his first match last Saturday that ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Shabana FC, says he has already seen encouraging signs from the squad as he prepares to lead the Brewers into Wednesday’s clash against Murang’a Seal at Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga.
Despite the setback in his debut, the French tactician insists the foundation is already being laid.
“I am very pleased and happy with the players. I am positively surprised because they have understood and practiced a lot of the instructions that I have given them.
Of course, we need time to achieve exactly what we want to do, and we still need to see all the players. I need to do it quickly in a short period of time, but we are in a good way,” Mette said.
The former AS Saint-Étienne academy coach points to the team’s reaction after conceding against Shabana as proof that his message is beginning to sink in.
Tusker responded with urgency and control, pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but were ultimately undone by fine margins.
“For me, what was important was the reaction. When we conceded, the team did not collapse. We tried to apply what we had worked on in training.
It is unlucky that we did not come back with a point or even three, because in terms of commitment and understanding, the players showed good things,” he added.
Club captain Charles Momanyi echoes his coach’s optimism, revealing that the dressing room has rallied behind the new technical bench and is determined to accelerate the adaptation process.
“The coach has been very interactive, and we are still learning from each other, but so far, so good. As players, we have received him well, and we have the motivation to take in what he wants us to do and implement it in games.
He is a winner and always wants to win, so we have to push ourselves as players,” Momanyi noted.
Saturday’s defeat saw Tusker slip to 11th in the FKF Premier League standings, an unfamiliar territory for a side accustomed to competing at the summit.
The Brewers now face an in-form Murang’a Seal side that boasts the league’s current top scorer, Joe Waithira, making Wednesday’s encounter a significant test of character and tactical discipline.
Mette, however, maintains that while respect for the opponent is important, his primary focus remains on refining his own team.
“I analyse the opponent and how they play, but for me, I am focused 90 per cent on how my team plays. If we correct our mistakes, I am sure we will be unbeatable.
I have been here for only one week, and we still have a lot to correct. There are lots of details that we need to improve. We already did a good job on Saturday, and now we have only small details to improve,” he explained.
Momanyi acknowledges the urgency of the moment, admitting that results must begin to reflect the effort being put in on the training ground.
“Since I arrived in this team, this is the highest number of games we have lost in a season. We are not in a good position, and we should strive to win.
We know we are facing a good team because they have been in good form and have the current top scorer in the league. We need to approach them with caution, but also not forget we are a big team as well,” the captain said.
