Tusker FC head coach Julien Mette has boldly described a 2-1 victory as the “perfect scoreline” in football, insisting that such narrow yet hard-earned wins are the ultimate reflection of a strong and resilient team.

The 44-year-old tactician made the remarks following Tusker’s dramatic 2-1 triumph over Kariobangi Sharks in a fiercely contested FKF Premier League encounter staged at Police Sacco Stadium on Monday, 2 March.

The 12-time league champions were forced to dig deep before securing maximum points in a match that tested their composure and character in equal measure.

Tusker had taken the lead through Francis Oduor, only for the in-form Humphrey Aroko to restore parity two minutes later with a sublime finish that momentarily silenced the Brewers’ bench.

With the contest delicately poised and Sharks appearing destined to walk away with a valuable point, Mette turned to his bench for inspiration.

Second-half substitute Ian Simiyu emerged as the hero of the afternoon, capitalising on a spilt ball from Harambee Stars custodian Sebastian Wekesa to tap home the decisive goal ten minutes from time.

The late strike not only secured all three points but also underlined Tusker’s depth and mental strength in pressure moments.

Speaking to Azam TV after the match, Mette offered a compelling explanation for his preference for the 2-1 scoreline.

“The best score for a coach to know you have a good team is to win 2-1, no matter the scenario. When you win 2-1, it means you’ve struggled but ultimately bagged maximum points from enduring moments,” he stated.

For the Frenchman, such victories symbolise balance, a team that attacks with intent, defends with resilience, and responds positively when tested.

Unlike dominant scorelines that may mask underlying weaknesses, a 2-1 win often exposes vulnerabilities while simultaneously proving a side’s ability to overcome them.

Mette admitted that Tusker’s lapse in concentration after conceding the equaliser forced him into decisive tactical adjustments earlier than planned.

“We had a good game until the equaliser, which exposed our concentration. We didn’t defend well at particular levels, and it forced me to make early substitutions that actually stabilised the team,” he acknowledged.

The introduction of Ian Simiyu, Bless Selasie, Chris Erambo, and David Polepole injected fresh energy and structure into the Brewers’ play.

The substitutions restored rhythm, improved ball retention, and ultimately shifted momentum in Tusker’s favour, a masterstroke that culminated in Simiyu’s late winner.

Since taking charge, Mette has emphasised possession-based football and structural discipline.

According to the former Rayon Sports and AS Otoho d'Oyo coach, the players have embraced his philosophy, with visible improvements in build-up play and game control.

“My philosophy has been well received because we can see a lot of change in terms of possession play. Now we have to work on the details heading forward,” he remarked.

With the league campaign entering a decisive phase, Mette has set clear objectives: finish strongly on the log and mount a serious challenge for the Mozzart Bet Cup.

“My immediate focus now is to have a strong finish on the log and win the cup at the end of the season,” he affirmed.
