Former Tusker player George Maina rejoins the club as assistant coach after seven years having worked in the same capacity back in 2013

Eighteen days after Charles Okere vacated Tusker’s supporting cast to ascend to the Harambee Starlets top seat, the Brewers, in a statement, officially confirmed the reappointment of George Maina as Robert Matano’s assistant coach with immediate effect.

Maina, who is making a comeback at the club after seven years having worked in the same capacity back in 2013, comes in fresh from being the head coach at National Division One outfit Naivas FC.

When speculation was rife as to who would replace Okere, Tusker FC chairman Daniel Aduda, in a previous interview on Mozzart Sport, revealed that it would only take the blessing of head coach Matano in order to pick the next successor, something Maina said played a part in accepting to return to the club.

“Tusker is like home to me because I have been here for many years as a player and as a coach. When coach Matano asked whether I could come work with him, I could not say no. I have worked with him before, he has coached me as a player and he is a person I hugely respect,” the former Tusker player revealed.

Matano on his part said that he settled on Maina due to the previous work experience that they have shared which made it easy to decide on reuniting with him.

“We have worked together for a long time and when the opportunity arose to have him back, I did not hesitate to ask him whether he could come. We continue the work and hopefully we win more trophies together,” he said.

Aduda on the other hand stated that Maina felt like the ideal candidate since he already has the advantage of being ingrained in the Brewers’ culture.

“George is a club legend having achieved so much at Tusker both as a player and as a coach. We are pleased to have him in and better because he knows the fabric of the club and it will not be hard for him to get started. I want to wish him all the best as he starts his job and hopefully we win trophies together,” Aduda said.

The former player’s immediate task at hand will be in helping Tusker to clinch this season’s league title, a feat they last managed in 2016. Currently, the team has a six point advantage over second placed KCB who have played one match less,
