Transfer market guru – Chelsea cashing in by offloading deadwood

The world club champion is bringing in plenty of players, but also clearly knows how to sell those no longer needed. As a result, they’ll earn around 70 million from just three surplus players

Chelsea are spending lavishly, as if money grows in the London gardens surrounding Stamford Bridge, but at the same time, they’re offloading players Enzo Maresca has labeled as surplus. So far, the Blues have brought in just over 150 million from outgoing transfers, and that figure is expected to surpass 200 million soon.

According to reports from the UK, the club has accepted Everton’s offer for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and will manage to recoup nearly the entire amount invested in his transfer from Leicester last summer. With bonuses included, the Toffees will pay Chelsea close to 35 million. Considering the midfielder’s market value is significantly lower (around 20 million according to Transfermarkt), this is considered good business for the Blues—especially given Dewsbury-Hall failed to impress during his year in London.

Joining him on the way out is tall French defensive midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, who was signed from Rennes two years ago for a hefty 27 million. Given he only played 12 Premier League matches for Chelsea (just 297 minutes), the reported 23 million that Burnley are set to pay to buy him outright also looks like a decent deal.

The third player expected to pack his bags this week is Carney Chukwuemeka. Borussia Dortmund have resumed talks with Chelsea and are close to signing the midfielder for around 25 million. Chelsea no longer want to loan out the player they signed from Aston Villa in 2023 for 18 million—they're planning a permanent sale, which the player himself supports. In fact, he’s pushing for the deal to be completed quickly.

RB Leipzig were also in the race for a while, but Borussia Dortmund now hold the advantage, especially since Chukwuemeka already spent six months at the Westfalenstadion and settled in well.

That means Chelsea could earn around 70 million in just a few days by the end of this week. And they’re not done yet. By the end of the month, more departures are expected—Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson…
