WPL heads on a break after the weekend matches with the transfer window expected to open on March 1 to15

Women Premier League (WPL) title hopefuls Gaspo Youth are out to complete a four-match unbeaten run when they take on relegation-threatened Makolanders in the final round of the league’s first leg.

The match, slated for Saturday, 13 February at Stima Grounds from 12 pm will see Isaac Maluki’s charges Gaspo fight for maximum points that will help cement their place in the top three. Thika Queens are in the lead with an unassailable 18 points after a six-match unbeaten run while second-placed Ulinzi Starlets have 12 points from four wins and two losses.

On paper, the Kiambu-based side have the upper hand over their rivals Makolanders. Gaspo have won three matches, drawn one and lost two while Makolanders have picked four points from a win and a draw in six matches.

In another top-three clash, Ulinzi clash with fourth-placed Zetech Sparks. The varsity side are separated from third-placed Gaspo by a goal difference and still have the potential to go into the top three before the league takes a mid-season break.

Ulinzi come into the match with a wounded ego, having lost their last match 2-1 to Gaspo. The Joseph Mwanza-coached military side need nothing short of a win to guard their second place as a loss has the potential of taking them down to fourth place if Gaspo win their match.

Zetech head coach Bernard Kitolo will miss the services of winger Elizabeth Kisah who is down with malaria. Her replacement Winnie Kwatenda will need to pull all stops to bag in the goals and give her side a fighting chance for a win against the military side.

“We are all set for the match. We are up against a good side with experienced players and it will not be an easy game. Having played against them in a pre-season friendly match, we know what to expect and the players are ready to give it their all,” said coach Kitolo.
