Bayern's Tel will probably start in the German cup game against Munster tonight
Harry Kane is expectedly the first topic in German football. He has eight goals and four assists in seven games, and what he did to Bochum in a 7:0 win (three goals, two more set ups) is almost inhumane. However, in his shadow, Bayern is developing another great star of European football. One for the future. And it is slowly becoming clear to all doubters why last summer Bayern gave Rennes 20 million euros, (and additional 8.5 million to his manager) in order to attract then 17-year-old Mathys Tel to Munich.

Of course, he was not projected as a starter immediately, but already in that first season there were also voices who believed that the Germans overcalculated when they bought the young Frenchman. Regardless of the fact that Tel broke the record in Rennes and became the youngest debutant in the history of the club (16 years, three months and 18 days), doubters were talking. With his goal against Stuttgart, Tel became Bayern's youngest scorer in the Bundesliga (17 years, four months, 17 days), but it seemed that the jump to the Allianz Arena was still too big for him at this moment. In that first season, he played only 600 minutes, scoring six goals.
"Even though I was frustrated that I couldn't achieve my own goal in terms of goals and assists, the first season enriched me. There were days when I came to training with the thought: 'Today, when I get the ball, I will do what I want with it'. Then I realized that I was wrong and I started to develop as a team player. I dribble a lot less now," Tel told L'Equipe.
He won't get minutes easily this season either, because of Harry Kane, but so far, Tel has perfectly used the few opportunities he got, even though it started badly, with a defeat against Leipzig in the German Supercup (0:3), when the young footballer missed a one-on-one situation with the score 0:0. This was followed by racist insults on social networks, and on the same day Kane's transfer was confirmed. Then an organized group of Bayern's ultras came to the defense of Tel, and they highlighted the slogan: "We are with you, Mathys, united against racism". Tel was delighted: "Thank you, family". The situation has turned 180 degrees.

Tel is still not playing as a starter, nor will he be anytime soon. But he plays every game. Five or 25 minutes, it doesn't matter. It is important that he uses the minutes perfectly. So far, he has collected 146 and scored four goals. And not only in unimportant moments. His goal was perhaps decisive in the victory over Manchester United (4:3) in the Champions League. His goal also solved the question of the winner in the league clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach (2:1). Tel has scored every 37 minutes this season. His three goals in the Bundesliga – all from a reserve role – mean he is currently the best wild card in the top five leagues. Tel's last eight goals have come after the 75th minute.
"My role is to give my best whenever I step on the field. And age is just a number for me. When I arrived, I was not used to this level and I put pressure on myself: 'Either adapt or die'. I immediately said to myself: 'If you are already here, it means that you have quality. You just have to have self-confidence'. Now I see that my role has changed, I feel that I am part of the group" said the youngster.
Thomas Tuchel is also satisfied, although it is clear to everyone that Tel will not be able to overcome Kane.
"Matis is 18 years old and has an important role. He has the ability to change games. Every time he enters the game - he hits. He can also assist. It has become our important weapon. The current situation is unfair to him, because he deserves to be the starter, but he has to go step by step. If he continues like this, it's only a question of when he will become a starter" said the coach.
Even his teammate Kane is impressed.
"I like the way he coaches. He constantly challenges himself and is very dedicated. He makes a difference every time he steps on the field," says the Tottenham legend, who also has an advisory role in Munich when it comes to Tel.
