Sebastian Abreu, 44, the journeyman from Uruguay, has signed a contract with his 31st club, which makes him a unique football player
El Loco. The Madman. That's the nickname of Sebastian Abreu, the 44-year-old Uruguayan striker who has just broken his own Guinness World Record for the number of clubs he featured for. The newly-promoted Uruguayan top division side Sud America will be his - brace yourself - 31st club in the 26-year-long career!
The prolific goalscorer is a journeyman who has played in 11 countries (Uruguay, Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador, Mexico, El Salvador, Spain, Greece, Israel) and has been an Uruguayan international for more than 15 years. Abreu represented his country in two World Cups and three Copa América tournaments, winning the latter in 2011.
Welcome note from his new club (©Sud America))According to relevant football websites, El Loco has scored an impressive amount of 384 goals at club level and 26 more for his national team. Two years ago, he even started his coaching adventure amid the roles of player-coach and caretaker but has now decided to give another push to his playing career.
Abreu's incredible path started in 1995 at Uruguayan slot Defensor after spending two years in their youth setups. After an unsuccessful tenure at the Spanish side Deportivo La Corunna, he collected as many as seven fruitful loans in six years, which showed this guy, not in the mood of settling at one place for good. Like many other respected South American outfits, Brazilian giants Gremio trusted in Abreu's goal-scoring potential, and he knew how to thank them.
In terms of numbers, his glory days were back in the Mexican team Cruz Azul, where he netted 34 times during the 2002/2003 season, likewise in the Brazilian Botafogo, where he scored a remarkable 55 goals between 2010 and 2012.
So here's the list of all El Loco's sides (if you fall asleep before the end of the list, no worries at all): Defensor, San Lorenzo, Deportivo La Coruña, Grêmio, Tecos, San Lorenzo, Nacional, Cruz Azul, América, Tecos, Nacional, Sinaloa, Monterrey, San Luis, UANL, River Plate, Beitar Jerusalem, River Plate, Real Sociedad, Aris, Botafogo, Figueirense, Nacional, Rosario Central, Aucas, Sol de América, Santa Tecla, Bangu, Central Español, Puerto Montt, Audax Italiano, Magallanes, Rio Branco, Boston River, Athletic Club-MG, Sud América.
Not too bud, huh...
