Teary-eyed Lukaku: "Losing my father like I did is hard every day"

After scoring a vital winner for Napoli against Verona yesterday, the Belgian commented on the goal, but also on a tough period he's been going through, marked by his father's death

Romelu Lukaku is officially back!

The robust striker was supposed to be the leader of Napoli's attack this season, but a severe hamstring injury spoiled both his and the club's plans, keeping him sidelined for over five months.

He returned to the pitch in late January, but clocked only 69 minutes across six games, as Antonio Conte didn't want to rush his comeback. Yesterday, he spent 18 minutes in action and became the Neapolitans' hero, scoring a 96th-minute winner.

Speaking to DAZN after the game, Lukaku was highly emotional and on the verge of tears, all because of a difficult period he's been through, which was marked by his father's death in September.

"These have been difficult months on a personal level. Football has given me everything in life. Losing my father like I did is hard every day, but I keep going for my children, for my brother, and for Naples, which has given me so much."

"Before I came here, I was dead; last year we did something beautiful. This year we had some difficulties, but we have to move forward," he said via Gianluca Di Marzio’s website.

He also touched on the goal he scored, but didn't put himself in the spotlight, as the team always comes first.

"A heavy goal? Yes, a very heavy one. But I'm happy for the team, we worked well this week, it's a shame about the goal we conceded. In the end, we'll take home the three points and look forward," Lukaku concluded.
