Atalanta have accepted Tottenham's offer for centre-back Cristian Romero

Tottenham have agreed a deal with Atalanta to sign Cristian Romero. Although the Italian club tried to play hardball, they couldn't refuse Spurs' improved offer of $60 million plus bonuses. I total, the transfer package for the Argentina centre-back is worth $65 million.

The 23-year-old has arrived to London to agree personal terms and sign a five-year deal that will make him the second most expensive signing in Tottenham's history after Tanguy Ndombele, who joined for $70 million in July 2019.

Romero made 42 appearances in all competitions last season as Atalanta finished third in Serie A and were runners-up in the Coppa Italia. A fine campaign drew interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, but it was Spurs who swooped in with a concrete offer. One of the reasons the North London club was so eager to land the Atalanta man is the fact they sold their long-serving Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld to Qatari club Al-Duhail for $14.3 million.

Atalanta have secured Juventus centre-back Merih Demiral as Romero's replacement. According to multiple reports in Italy after a day or two of hammering out the final details between the two clubs, Juventus and Atalanta have agreed to terms on a loan deal for Turkish defender. The 23-year-old Demiral will first arrive on loan with an option to buy after the 2021/22 season. According to Sky Italia's Fabrizio Romano, the total cost of the deal will be around $36 million, with the first $3.5 million coming for the loan and Atalanta having a buy option of €28 million in 12 months.

Tottenham have already signed goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on an initial season-long loan deal from Atalanta, with the option to make it a permanent deal.
