Solo backs Nzoia Sugar to surpass last season's remarkable performance

New Nzoia Sugar coach Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor is confident his side can do better than last season despite a mass exodus of players ahead of the new 2023/24 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) season.

Oduor was appointed to the position on Saturday taking over from Salim Babu who left to join Kenya Police as an assistant coach.

Speaking hours after his unveiling Oduor said, "Obviously my target is to do better than we did last season. I understand it is a big challenge but the ambition is there to build on the good performance we had."

Oduor admitted his concerns about the mass exodus of some of the key players but was quick to add that he already has a plan to mitigate the same.

“Although some of those departures have not been confirmed, it is a big concern. However, my confidence lies in the fact that from where the team is based, we have a pool of many talented players.

“My plan is to identify this talent and give them the required training and confidence and we are sure they too will do well,” he said.

Asked if he will struggle to fill the big shoes left by his predecessor, Oduor said he is not worried about that insisting that having been at Nzoia before Babu, he has nothing to prove.

“I was here before Babu came and were already doing some good work which I intend to continue despite the challenges.”

Oduor was replaced by Babu after he opted to leave the sugar millers and join KCB as an assistant coach to Zedekiah Otieno.

The bankers did not renew the contracts of the two after it lapsed last month.

Nzoia finished fourth last season after collecting 64 points and a good number of the players who helped them achieve this feat have since left leaving Oduor with the tough task of rebuilding a new winning squad.
