Slot to stay at Liverpool after all?

Reading Time: 2min | Fri. 10.04.26. | 15:45

Reportedly, the management thinks he needs more time to finish the transition from Jurgen Klopp era

It has long been said—especially in sports—that nothing is over until it’s truly over. All the stories, speculation, and insider information, whether true or false, mean nothing until a club makes it official. That’s why the news reported by the The Daily Telegraph now sounds so shocking: the owners of Liverpool FC want Arne Slot to remain on the Reds’ bench next season. This goes completely against everything that has been circulating for days and months—that the Dutchman’s time is up and that Xabi Alonso has already packed his bags for a return to Anfield, this time as a coach.

The news is even more interesting as it comes just a day after Liverpool’s very poor performance in the UEFA Champions League and a 2–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in France, where Slot himself admitted his team actually got off lightly. According to The Telegraph, there is a consensus within the club’s leadership that Slot should stay, as the transition from the era of Jurgen Klopp is far from easy. The club’s management believes the team’s poor performances have been influenced by the tragedy involving Diogo Jota, as well as the unresolved situation of star player Mohamed Salah, and also Andrew Robertson, both of whom have hinted at departures. Because of this, captain Virgil van Dijk stated that this marks the end of one era at Liverpool.

Reportedly, Slot has been made aware that he has made a number of mistakes this season, but there is a prevailing opinion that he should be given four transfer windows to build a squad to his liking. By comparison, Klopp had five transfer windows before winning his first trophy with Liverpool—the Champions League in 2019. The Dutch coach is under contract with Liverpool until the end of next season, and no major decisions will be made until it becomes clear how the next campaign begins. As things stand, Arne Slot will at least start the new season at Anfield.
