The defensive midfielder joined Dundee last year from Major League Soccer (MLS) side Philadelphia Union but struggled for game time.

In January, he was loaned out to Serbian outfit OFK Beograd for the second half of the 2024/25 season.

He returned to Tannadice for pre-season but was not involved in the club’s opening fixtures, a clear sign he was not in the coach’s plans.

Dundee United have now confirmed his departure in a brief statement that was posted on the club's official portal.

“Dundee United can today confirm Richard Odada has left the club to pursue other opportunities,” the statement read.

The club also wished him well, noting: "The Kenyan midfielder, who made 13 appearances for the Terrors, leaves with our best wishes for his future endeavours.”

Odada, who is currently in camp with the Harambee Stars preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles, had earlier been described by head coach Jim Goodwin as a player adjusting to the Scottish game.

“The whole thing with us since Richard came to the club was to try and speed his game up a little bit. He won’t get the time and space on the ball in Scotland like he would have been used to at other clubs,” Goodwin explained.

Odada began his career at AFC Leopards’ youth system before moving to Serbia in 2019, where he signed for Red Star Belgrade.

He went on to play for RFK Grafičar Beograd and FK Metalac Gornji Milanovac before joining Philadelphia Union and later their reserve team in the United States.

At the international level, Odada has become a mainstay in the Harambee Stars midfield following the retirement of Victor Wanyama.

Seen as Wanyama’s natural successor, he even inherited the former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton captain’s iconic number 12 jersey.
