Savinho 'The Saviour' comes to the rescue, as City finally win

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 29.12.24. | 19:28

The Brazilian noted a goal and an assist for Haaland, to seal the victory over Leicester which ended Man City's five-game winless run (2-0)

Barely a win! Just like in the numerous matches throughout the past two months, Man City struggled heavily. Yet, Pep Guardiola's team had a saviour named (coincidentally?) Savinho, who sealed Leicester's fate with a goal and an assist - 2-0.

The Brazilian's 21st-minute opener did not reduce the pressure as Leicester wasted a few massive chances, but Haaland's 74th-minute goal (on City's first attempt after the break?!) after Savinho's assist meant the Cityzens would finally win.

Even though Leicester were in the relegation zone, Man City's confidence was so ruined that no one expected an easy win. Kevin De Bruyne and "the cursed" Erling Haaland (thrice) threatened but in vain, while the Foxes responded over Stephy Mavididi and Jamie Vardy.

What Haaland failed to do, Savinho managed, netting his first goal with Man City after using the rebound following Phil Foden's powerful effort and Jakub Stolarczyk's deflection. Yet, the opener failed to boost the Cityzens' self-esteem, as the Foxes were very close to the leveller six minutes before the break when Facundo Buonanotte hit the post.

As if that chance showed Ruud van Nistelrooy's team they could harm the champions, Leicester started playing more risky, pressing the Cityzens' defensive line. However, Manuel Akanji saved City with a goal-line clearance after James Justin's attempt, while Vardy missed a colossal chance in the 68th minute.

The punishment came six minutes later, from City's first attempt in the second half?! The young sub, James McAtee, initiated a counterattack, which Haaland finished with a perfect header, using Savinho's ideal cross, for 2-0! Even the second visitors' goal did not discourage the Foxes, who kept attacking but in vain.

Following today's triumph, Man City will be back in the TOP 5, at least for some time, but most importantly for them, the terrible run is finally over. Yet, this match also showed that the Cityzens' confidence is pretty spoiled and that a lot of work await Guardiola before his team returns to the were it was a couple of months ago.
