On Tuesday, 11 November, the record league champions officially announced Owalo’s appointment.
"This is to formally notify the general public, the football fraternity, and Gor Mahia fans at large that the club has confirmed the appointment of Hon. Eliud Owalo as the substantive club patron," the statement, signed by club chairman Ambrose Rachier, read.
The announcement, however, has been met with resistance from some supporters, particularly those who recently made a pilgrimage to Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, the resting place of the late former Prime Minister and long-serving club patron, the Right Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.
During the visit, fans openly expressed their disapproval of the new appointment and reaffirmed their loyalty to the late Odinga, widely regarded as the heart and soul of Gor Mahia.
In a public statement, Bolo sought to clarify the sequence of events and her role in organising the visit.
She explained that prior to the pilgrimage, she and club treasurer Gerphas Okuku convened a consultative meeting with branch representatives at a hotel, where the idea to honour the late Raila Odinga was discussed and unanimously supported.
The proposal was subsequently presented to the Executive Committee, which endorsed it.
"On the eve of our fixture against Ulinzi Stars, the club treasurer Gerphas Okuku and I held a consultative meeting with our branch representatives (CoC) at Milele Hotel.
During that meeting, the idea to visit Kang’o Ka Jaramogi was tabled, discussed, and unanimously supported," Bolo stated.
"The following morning, we briefed the rest of the Executive Committee on the resolutions reached, and there was general concurrence.
I must clarify that the Executive Committee was fully informed of this initiative. While I may not fully understand why some members did not join us, I respect their individual choices and remain confident that our shared love for Gor Mahia binds us stronger than any temporary differences."
Bolo added that over 2,000 club members joined the pilgrimage, describing it as a solemn and dignified occasion that celebrated unity, love, and respect, the hallmarks of Gor Mahia.
During the visit, fans raised two main concerns, which were that the patron position should remain vacant and that a Special General Meeting should be convened to deliberate on the matter.
Bolo pledged to present these issues at the next Executive Committee sitting, reaffirming her commitment to representing the members’ voice.
"I appeal to all K’Ogalo faithful to approach this discussion with patience, mutual respect, and the wisdom Baba taught us, that love for the greater good should always prevail," she urged.
Bolo concluded with a call for solidarity and continued commitment to the club:
"Let us uphold the spirit of togetherness that has carried us for generations. Through dialogue, understanding, and unwavering devotion to our beloved club, we will navigate this moment, for the love of K’Ogalo, for the spirit of Baba Raila Odinga, for the greater good."
The vice-chairperson’s message comes at a critical juncture, as Gor Mahia fans strive to balance honouring the legacy of a cherished patron with accepting new leadership.
The club’s hierarchy now faces the challenge of addressing the growing dissent while maintaining unity among its passionate supporters.
