By a twist of fate, Al Hilal Omdurman were forced to compete in three different leagues – and as things stand, they could win all three
Sudanese football club Al Hilal Omdurman is living through one of the most extraordinary episodes in football history. The club is currently top of the table in Rwanda and has the chance to become champions of three different countries within the last 12 months. How is that even possible?
Because of the war that broke out in Sudan, Al Hilal was forced to leave their homeland. The club, along with their biggest rivals, had to flee the civil war. Since July 2024, Al Hilal and their main rivals Al-Merreikh have found refuge in Mauritania, where the local football federation invited them to take part in the national championship.

Despite the challenges of exile, Al Hilal adapted quickly and eventually won the Mauritanian Super D1 title.
After a crucial 0–0 draw against ASC Ksar, they secured the title and ended FC Nouadhibou’s seven-year dominance. However, despite the huge success, problems emerged. Fans were unhappy with the style of play, and speculation grew that legendary Congolese coach Florent Ibenge would leave the club.
The club briefly returned to their homeland to take part in a shortened national championship, designed to determine which Sudanese clubs would qualify for the CAF Champions League. Due to security concerns, foreign players—key to the club’s success—refused to return to Sudan. Despite these difficulties, Al Hilal competed and won the shortened summer tournament, adding a second trophy to their turbulent season.

In search of further competition, Sudanese clubs Al Hilal, El Merreikh and Al Ahli SC Wad Madani were granted permission to join the Rwandan Premier League. In their new environment, Al Hilal once again showed their strength. They are currently leading the league and, with three games in hand over their closest rivals, are in a dominant position to secure a third national title in a single year.
If they succeed, Al Hilal will achieve an unprecedented feat—winning league titles in three different countries within just one year, something that would be a first in football history.
