The win lifts the Bankers to third as Sharks, still without a goal, drop to ninth

Richard Omondi scored his maiden goal in the FKF Premier League as KCB FC bounced back from defeat to beat Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 at Kasarani Annex on Tuesday, 30 September.

The attacking midfielder, signed from Division Two side Leads United in the off-season transfer window, got off the mark for his new side in the 36th minute, handing the Bankers their second win of the season and immediate reprieve following their shock 1-0 loss to Mathare United last Friday.

Starting upfront for his third straight game, Omondi swept a chested ball from Humphrey Mieno past Sebastian Wekesa, a strike that on the other end of the spectrum, condemned Kariobangi Sharks to their first defeat of the season.

Having expressed some worry that his side were becoming a blunt force, Sharks coach William Muluya, watched on again as his team laboured to find a route to goal, and will be left frustrated after another tepid show left his side without a goal this season.

KCB, with the win, moved up to third, while Sharks dropped to ninth.

Match Report

The Bankers, conspicuously without head coach Robert Matano on the touchline in the first half, were by far the superior side in a stop-start opening period, employing a heavy press on their much smaller opponents, who were lucky not to have gone behind earlier on.

Goalscorer Omondi was guilty of failing to direct Mathias Isogoli’s corner goalwards in the second minute, as was Ammaton Samunya, who shot over from a similar set-play.

The Bankers' first real go at goal, however, came in the 16th minute, when Omondi found himself in space inside the box, only for Biko Omollo to hurl his body on the line.

Muluya’s side, clearly on the ropes, did have one chance to go from a quick counter-attack, but Markvivan Kesa fired over after a brilliant run by Zablon Kutela.

They came to rue that missed chance four minutes later, as a quick interplay of passes from behind resulted in skipper Humphrey Mieno chesting a cross from Disemba Kisakah for Odhiambo to squeeze past Wekesa.

KCB were deservedly in the lead, and only had to call upon debutant Elvis Ochoro to make his first save of the half when Patila Omoto threatened with a free kick just outside the box.

While the first half was stop-start, the second half was more like a KCB procession, as both struggled to make any visible impact on the game.

Substitutions came and went, but the scoreline remained unaffected.
