Renovating two stadiums at the same time? Not impossible when you're Barcelona

Barca will play their home matches away from Camp Nou during the 2023/24 campaign

We've been reading stories about Barcelona's poor financial state for over a year. The debt is spiralling out of control, the standard of their squad is deteriorating - and yet, they are plotting big-money transfers and are embarking on an ambitious project to modernise their home stadium. What gives, Barca?

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed that the club would play home matches in the 2023/24 season at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium while working on the Camp Nou's roof and the highest level of stands is underway.

Montjuic Stadium, named after the hill close to the city, was used for the 1992 Summer Olympic Games and was the home of Barca's city rivals Espanyol between 1997 and 2009. It's a nearly a century-old stadium that has undergone several renovations during its history. And Barcelona will have to modernise it further before they start using it as their temporary home.

After promoting the new home shirt, largely inspired by the Olympic Games that took place three decades ago, Laporta now wants his club to embrace the Olympic heritage of the city and the old stadium.

"We committed ourselves to adapting the Olympic Stadium's infrastructure and modernising many aspects. We'll attend to the stands, press areas, changing rooms, and the parking area. It's an iconic stadium of the Olympic Barcelona, an important landmark of our city. We want to make the season there a memorable one."

At first, there were rumours that Barcelona would increase Montjuic's 55,000-capacity, but that won't be the case. Not even Barcelona can afford to spend that much of the money they don't even have in their accounts.
