Red Devils comfortably through to the semi-finals of the Europa League

Reading Time: 3min | Fri. 16.04.21. | 00:00

Cavani opened with a goal and an own goal from Granada's defence closed off the game

Manchester United entered this Europa League second leg in confident mood, holding on to a 2-0 lead brought from Spain a week ago.

The Spanish side came to Manchester to compete and it wasn't a walk in the park for the hosts. Either way, eventually, another win for United against Granada - 2-0.

It didn't take long for the hosts to take the lead. Edinson Cavani made it one-nil in the 6th minute - Paul Pogba got to the ball and headed it over the defence to Cavani, who met it nicely and fired it into the back of the net.

'El Matador' has scored in European competition for the 11th consecutive season, with this being his first goal in the Europa League since December 2012 (for Napoli v PSV).

Even though they were far behind, Granada did not want to go down without a fight. In the 8th minute Yangel Herrera blew a huge opportunity - he caught on to a perfect cross from the wing into the penalty area, but his bullet header went just wide of the right post. Same player tried in the 21st minute with another header and again - not accurate enough.

Man United tried doubling their lead in the 34th minute via their best player this season - Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese missed a big opportunity with his shot going just over the crossbar.

Red Devils were aware of the advantage they had and they played just as much as they needed to get through. Much passing, holding the possession, it all went in favour of the English side who needed to "rest" while awaiting their next opponent in the competition. Of course, there is the Premier League Champions League race in which they stand 2nd pretty comfortably.

Paul Pogba was all over the pitch in the first half, full of energy and asking for the ball eager to control the match.

Second half started with Granada trying to equalize fast. Jorge Molina rose high in the 50th minute to head a nice lofted cross towards the middle of the goal. Unfortunately for him, his close-range effort lacked pace and David de Gea made a comfortable save.

Forgotten Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek took his chance in the 60th minute as he unleashed a decent effort from just outside the box and it went narrowly wide of the left post.

Six minutes later Granada tried themselves - German Sanchez was furious with himself as he missed a great opportunity - he sent a rebound a few inches wide of the right post.

As a cherry on top of this double match-up, United got their second goal in the final seconds of the game. Jesus Vallejo attempted to head the ball away after a cross into the penalty area, but instead he accidentally sent it inside the right post of his own goal.

United controlled both matches and deservedly proceed to final 4 of Europa League. Some would say they are favourites to win it.

After tonight's games, Manchester United will be meeting Roma in the semi-finals while Arsenal, who defeated Slavia in Prague, will face Villareal.

Semi-final opening ties will be played on the 29th of April while second legs will occur on the 6th of May.
