Ratcliffe: 'Amorim will get three years at United'

Manchester's minority owner gave full support to the struggling coach

The British press has been calling for his replacement for some time now — although, it seems, that won’t be necessary. Those in charge at Old Trafford appear ready to be patient with Ruben Amorim. Or at least Sir Jim Ratcliffe will make sure that’s the case. One of Manchester United’s co-owners appeared on The Times’ new podcast, ‘The Business’, where he stated that the Portuguese coach would need three years to “prove that he’s an excellent manager.” Out of his first 50 matches with the club, Amorim has won only twenty — just 40 percent — and since he started the current season disappointingly, just as he ended the previous one, the British media have already begun speculating about his dismissal.

However, Ratcliffe insists he won’t bow to media pressure and assures that Amorim will be given the time he needs to work, recalling the example of Mikel Arteta, for whom Arsenal showed patience.

You also look at Mikel Arteta at Arsenal. He had a miserable time over the first couple of years. We have to be patient. We have a long-term plan. It isn't a light switch” he said.

When asked whether that means he would give Amorim three years, and what if the majority owners wanted to sack him Ratcliffe replied:

It’s not going to happen. He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That's where I would be. You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions. You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow”.

Ratcliffe isn’t perfect either. And although he has done everything for the good of the club, many have criticized his management of United — especially for the hundreds of layoffs after his arrival and for canceling free lunches for stadium staff.

The costs were just too high. There are some fantastic people at Manchester United, but there was also a level of mediocrity and it had become bloated. I got a lot of flak for the free lunches, but no one's ever given me a free lunch. The biggest correlation, like it or not, between results and any external factor - is profitability. The more cash you have got, the better squad you can build. We're not seeing all the benefits of the restructuring that we've done in this set of financial results. Those numbers will get better. Manchester United will become the most profitable football club in the world, in my view, and from that will stem, I hope, a long-term, sustainable, high-level of football" said Ratcliffe.
