PSG's next project - Enzo Fernandez

The deal could be struck in June and not in the January transfer window

Last season, Paris Saint-Germain’s midfield dominated every pitch they played on away from home, outplayed every opponent that stood in their way, and put on footballing masterclasses wherever they went. In the end, that is what carried them to the roof of Europe for the first time in the history of the club from the French capital. This season they are continuing at the same pace: they are playing excellently in Europe and sit second in the domestic league, they have won the French Super Cup, and the only blemish so far is an early exit from the cup after losing at the Parc des Princes to city rivals Paris (1–0). For now, they will “get through” this season with the outstanding midfield they already have, and from June they could strengthen and cement it even further.

PSG have set their sights on Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who sits at the very top of Luis Enrique’s wish list. They have already begun to “test the waters” and inquire about the Chelsea player’s situation, but as reported by L’Équipe, they will not make a concrete move in the January transfer window. Instead, they will wait until June and then launch an attack for the world champion with Argentina and Club World Cup winner with Chelsea. There are also preconditions for such a transfer.

In mid-December, Enzo Fernandez changed his agent—more precisely, his entire agency. He moved to “The Elegant Game,” as the management company is called, and interestingly, one of its co-owners and founders is Javier Pastore, who spent many years playing for Paris Saint-Germain. The very fact that “El Flaco” is one of the owners of the agency fuels the story and the parallel that negotiations with the French champions may already be under way, as they would like to strengthen their midfield with Enzo. However, there will certainly be a lot of negotiations regarding both the transfer fee and the contract they would offer him.

Chelsea paid Benfica as much as 121 million euros for the midfielder on the final day of January 2023, and they would certainly not let such an important player go easily, especially not at a loss. Although Fernandez’s current market value is 85 million, it is unrealistic to expect any talks to begin below 100 million, given today’s market, PSG’s financial power, and Chelsea’s demands when selling players. When you add that Enzo has a contract until 2032, it becomes clear that this would be a long and arduous negotiation. If Fernandez arrives in June, Luis Enrique will have pleasant headaches and a serious puzzle to solve, as his midfield could potentially include Fabián Ruiz, Joao Neves, Vitinha, and on top of that the Argentine midfielder. In general, they already have the best midfield in the world, with realistically only Arsenal’s midfield currently able to stand shoulder to shoulder with them—but as the saying goes in our country, you can never have enough.

The only issue surrounding a transfer and playing in France could be the incident Enzo Fernandez had after winning the 2024 World Cup in Qatar. At the time, during a live broadcast on social media, he sang songs that insulted the French, specifically dark-skinned players, including racist chants and slurs about the African origins of some French players. He did apologize, but it is doubtful that the French have forgiven and forgotten. At present, Enzo is also considering his future at Chelsea. He developed a good relationship with Enzo Maresca, and the Italian’s dismissal—after which Liam Rosenior took over—has clearly affected him. So far this season, he has played 30 matches in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.
