PSG have to play 60 million to Mbappe

The French court ruled in favor of Mbappe lawsuite

The holidays are approaching, which means gifts are coming too — and some will be more expensive than others. Still, it’s hard to imagine anyone receiving a bigger bonus than Kylian Mbappe, who has won a court case against Paris Saint-Germain in France, ruling that the reigning European champions must pay him 61,000,000 euros! Enough to cover both New Year’s celebrations and the 27th birthday he will celebrate in four days.

This 61,000,000 will be paid on the basis of unpaid wages and bonuses — debts dating back to the period when PSG fell out with their former favorite because of his decision to leave as a free agent in June 2024 and join Real Madrid. They were so angry that they even sued Mbappe over the fact that a year earlier he had refused to move to Saudi side Al Hilal in a transfer that would have brought 300,000,000 into the Paris club’s coffers. And of course Nasser Al-Khelaifi wanted payback, considering that back in 2018 he paid 180,000,000 to bring Mbappe from Monaco, only for it to become clear by 2023 that the player wanted Madrid at all costs.

In truth, over those six years Mbappe repaid that investment on the pitch: he played 308 matches for Paris Saint-Germain, scored 256 goals, provided 110 assists, won the French league six times, lifted four domestic cup trophies, and played in the Champions League final in 2020… Yet that most valuable trophy of all was won by Les Parisiens only after Kylian had left. In the end, everything concluded in a very ugly way. Mbappe initially demanded as much as 263,000,000 in court. PSG counterclaimed 440,000,000 from their former player. Naturally, neither side could be awarded such sums, but PSG will nevertheless have to pay — and heavily.

This ruling confirms that contractual obligations must be respected. The truth is simple: even in the professional football industry, labor law applies to everyone. Mr. Mbappe, for his part, respected all contractual obligations for seven years, right up to the final day. He did everything he could to avoid legal proceedings, even withdrawing a harassment complaint in order to de-escalate the situation. All in all, he was simply asking to be paid his wages and bonuses for more than 18 months,” said Mbappe’s lawyer, Frederic Casserot, with satisfaction.

On top of all this, PSG will be required to publish the full ruling on the club’s official website and keep it there for one month. How laughable now sounds the claim from the club’s lawsuit seeking 440,000,000, which argued that Mbappe should pay them 60,000,000 simply for having damaged their reputation. PSG does have the right to appeal, but with all of its arguments dismissed today, it is fair to ask whether that would make any sense.
